چکیده

An in vitro technique for perfusion of the intestinal vasculature and lumen was developed and used to measure calcium (Ca) fluxes across the intestinal mucosa of the marine teleost, the Atlantic cod {Gadus morhua). Saturable and nonsaturable components of the calcium influx and efflux were determined. The calcium influx had one passive component and one saturable component, following Michaelis-Menten kinetics with Km = 8-41mmoll~ 1 and Vmax = 0-604 /rniolCa"" kg" h". At physiological Ca concentrations in the vascular ([Ca] = l -9mmoir) and luminal ([Ca] = U-9mmoW) perfusion fluids, the saturable component amounted to 60% of the Ca influx. The high-affinity Ca-ATPase inhibitor chlorpromazine (CP, 10~moll~) antagonized 45% of the Ca influx. The Ca efflux across the intestinal mucosa of the cod was a saturable process, following Michaelis-Menten kinetics with Km =6-15mmoll~ 1 and Vmax = 3-79JumolCa kg-h-, but insensitive to CP ( lO^molP 1 ) . The Ca efflux was l-22jumolCa kg" h", representing about 20% of the total calcium excretion and about 50 % of the extrarenal excretion of the Atlantic cod in vivo.

Temperature Modulates the Effects of Ocean Acidification on Intestinal Ion Transport in Atlantic Cod, Gadus morhua

CO2-driven seawater acidification has been demonstrated to enhance intestinal bicarbonate secretion rates in teleosts, leading to an increased release of CaCO3 under simulated ocean acidification scenarios. In this study, we investigated if increasing CO2 levels stimulate the intestinal acid-base regulatory machinery of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and whether temperatures at the upper limit of ...

An assessment of juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua distribution and growth using diver operated stereo‐video surveys

Stereo-video scuba transects were conducted during daylight hours from June to September 2013 within a proposed marine protected area (MPA) in the Firth of Clyde, west of Scotland. More juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua of fork length (LF ) range 6-11 cm were observed in substrata containing mixed gravel, including maerl, than in boulder-cobble substrata with high algal cover, or sand with low...

Effects of ocean acidification on the calcification of otoliths of larval Atlantic cod Gadus morhua

The growth and development of the aragonitic CaCO3 otoliths of teleost fish could be vulnerable to processes resulting from ocean acidification. The potential effects of an increase in atmospheric CO2 on the calcification of the otoliths were investigated by rearing Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. larvae in 3 pCO2 concentrations — control (370 μatm), medium (1800 μatm) and high (4200 μatm) — from ...

Mating competition between farmed and wild cod Gadus morhua

Increasing numbers of hatchery-produced fish entering marine environments has caused concern over potential fitness depressions in wild populations, yet no study has addressed the likelihood of hybridisation between farmed and wild marine fish. Escape rates of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. from commercial net pens have been substantial and there is a risk of interbreeding between depleted local ...

Egg buoyancy variability in local populations of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)

Previous studies have found strong evidences for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) egg retention in fjords, which are caused by the combination of vertical salinity structure, estuarine circulation, and egg specific gravity, supporting small-scaled geographical differentiations of local populations. Here, we assess the variability in egg specific gravity for selected local populations of this species...
